Award Winning Stage Play: 'VI Degrees' Comes To Philadelphia

6/29/09 By Lisa Berrien

Theatrical Work 'VI Degrees' By Playwright Kash Goins Raises HIV/AIDS Awareness Among African American Community

Kash Goins of GoKash Productions has awakened many with his award winning stage play 'VI Degrees'. The play is centralized around the consequences of unprotected sex, prostitution, adultery, and living on the "down low," which attributes to the high rate of HIV/AIDS amongst African Americans. Kash describes GoKash Production as providing "high quality entertainment and social awareness." He also communicates the root of his interest in this subject. According to Kash, he knew of quite a few unfortunate circumstances with victims of HIV/AIDS. One involving two young girls living in different states, they were both adopted and infected with HIV at birth from their birth mother. Neither of the girls were aware of their illness until they were told by a doctor, and on one's search to find the birth mother, they found the other sister and discover they are ill for the same reason.

The play also pays special attention to the consequences of unprotected sex and the responsibility that comes with that decision. "As adults, when we examine our reckless lifestyles, we have to be aware of our decisions," says Kash. The 2009 Downtown Urban Theater Festival in New York City awarded VI Degrees with "Best Play." GoKash Productions hopes that this play sparks awareness and encourages more to get tested, as well as slim some of the discriminations against the disease. "African Americans don't get tested and don't get treated," states Kash.

The premiere of this touching and dramatic production will be Monday July 27, through Sunday August 2, 2009 at the Adriene Theatre 2030 Samson Street in Philadelphia, PA, nightly at 7:30 pm with 3:00pm matinees on the weekends.
