I understand where you’re coming from ladies, I really do. I know what it’s like sitting in that crowded place for hours on a Saturday morning waiting your turn. I know what it’s like to flip pages over and over in Black Hair Magazine trying to find the perfect hair style. Yes ladies, I know what it’s like to pay over two hundred dollars a month for hair. What I can’t seem to comprehend is why many black women rather sacrifice their health for something trivial as hair. Although hair is not the only reason many black women refuse to work out, it is a common excuse black women give when asked why they won’t hop on the treadmill.

While it’s understandable that many black women may be reluctant to work out because of the amount of money they spend on hair. Is hair as essential as being healthy? According to Women’s Health African-American women have the highest rates of being overweight and obese compared to other groups in the United States. About 4 in 5 African-American women are overweight or obese. If you’re an African American woman who is overweight you’re probably tired of family members, friends, and doctors telling you to lose weight. If that black women is you, I’m here to tell you that you can lose weight and there are many great benefits to working out.

When many women think of working out they fear they have to spend countless hours inside the gym, when it’s simply not true. Eating healthy is essential when trying to lose those unwanted pounds. You have to burn more calories than you put in. You know that fried chicken you love? Bake it. Those carbs you can’t resist? Cut them out completely until you get close to your ideal weight. That chocolate fudge sundae that’s just calling your name, ignore it. Once you’ve gained the will power to cut out the unhealthy foods, its then time to hit the gym.

Nonetheless gaining the will power to cut out unhealthy food is not easy, yet the process of losing weight doesn’t have to be as brutal. It can actually be fun. If you lack motivation grab a gym partner and workout together. Set goals and try your best to achieve them. When you begin to lose weight give yourself a treat. Maybe you can finally have that chocolate fudge sundae that has been calling your name.

That chocolate fudge sundae won’t be your only reward. Mayo Clinic suggest exercise also improves mood, boosts energy, combats health conditions and diseases, controls weight, promotes better sleep, and puts the spark back into your sex life. If that isn’t a reward within itself I don’t know what is. So ladies the next time you go into the hair salon you’re not only going to be thrilled to get your hair done; you’re going to be excited to step out on that Saturday night not only looking great from all the hard work you put in at the gym, but most importantly feeling good.
