UNCF Intensifies Efforts to Raise $5 Million to Help Minority College Students Graduate This Year

Hundreds of young American minority college students in their final year of college are in immediate danger of not graduating.

They have hit the economic wall and have nowhere else to turn," said Pearl Algere-Lonian, Director of Financial Aid at Xavier University of Louisiana, one of the 38 historically black colleges and universities that are members of UNCF (United Negro College Fund).

Corporation for National and Community Service, Points of Light Bring Americans Together to Honor Dr. King's Legacy

Six organizations have been awarded grants to lead service projects and dialogue on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service to transform Dr. King's life and teachings into community service that helps create change in communities across the country. All these organizations will bring communities together to bridge differences and address homelessness, hunger and poverty that American families and veterans face today.

Citing Philadelphia’s rich African-American history and diversity, National Urban League (NUL) President and CEO Marc H. Morial and Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter today announced that the city will host the League’s 2013 Annual Conference.

“We are proud that Philadelphia is home to a thriving Urban League affiliate, and our selection to host the 2013 Annual Conference is a very welcome validation of our accomplishments and strategic focus on economic empowerment through public policy advocacy, quality programs and employment opportunities.”

The U.S. Small Business Administration announced today that due to a steady decrease of activity, the Business Recovery Centers located throughout Pennsylvania will cease operations Thursday, Dec. 1 at the close of business.
